What is the purpose of the CSHA Graduate Student Scholarship Program?
CSHA offers this scholarship to encourage and support students to continue on toward their advanced degree and become credentialed and/or licensed to practice as a professional in the field.

Is the CSHA scholarship competitive?
CSHA recognizes that all students who have or will complete their undergraduate studies and have been selected to continue on to a graduate program are deserving of recognition and support. Due to the possibility of fewer awards available than applicants, a selection process which involves a relative rating may be necessary any given year.

How do I find out about the scholarship program?
Information regarding the program and the application is disseminated each year to those schools which have undergraduate and graduate programs in speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, communicative disorders, or audiology. Department chairpersons and clinical directors as listed on the CSHA web site receive information and applications to disseminate annually. The CSHA web page also has information and applications.

Who will determine those applicants who will receive awards?
The selection process involves a procedure utilizing the nomination committees in each of the CSHA districts with the final determination made by the CSHA State Honors and Awards Committee. All applicants whose applications are complete and meet high standards will be recognized by the association. The number of financial awards will be determined by the revenues available each year.

What does the selection committee look for when reviewing the application?
The committees will determine the completeness of the application and supporting documents and will review:
  • Cumulative GPA
  • Description of undergraduate and graduate involvement in pre-professional and volunteer organizations
  • Statement of career objectives and professional interest
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Brief statement of intended use of scholarship funds

Do I need to be a CSHA student member to apply for a scholarship?
Yes, membership will be confirmed by the district nomination committee at the time of the application review.

Does the graduate program have to be here in California?
The CSHA scholarships are for those students who will be attending an advanced degree program for speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, communicative disorders, or audiology in the State of California.

Application Process:

Who can apply?
Any student who is currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, communicative disorders, or audiology or will be at the time of presentation (spring annual state conference) is eligible to apply. If graduate studies are completed during the fall or winter semesters, the applicants will still be eligible.

Do I need to be a member of CSHA to apply for a scholarship?
One purpose of the scholarship program is to familiarize the student with the professional organization that represents the interest of speech pathologists and audiologist is California. In order to be eligible to be considered, an applicant must be a member or becoming a member during the application submission.

Can an applicant apply and be awarded a scholarship more than once?
Yes, as long as you are currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, communicative disorders, or audiology or will be at the time of presentation (spring annual state conference).

When do I apply?
The application deadline is July 31st of each year. The application and supporting documents must be submitted by this date.

To whom do I send the application?
The application and supporting documents are sent to the nominations committee chair (District Director Elect) in the district of the applicant's permanent residence. The district number and the contact information of the District Director Elect can be located on the CSHA web page.

Will I know prior to the spring annual conference if I will be recognized and/or receive a financial award?
The final selections are made by the State Honors and Awards committee in November / December. Letters acknowledging CSHA's intent to recognize and/or award a scholarship will be sent to the applicant and will be published in CSHA publications prior to the CSHA spring annual state conference.

How will I receive the scholarship money?
A personal check for $1,000 will be made by CSHA to the selected applicant.

Will I have to return the scholarship money if I choose not to attend?
If, for any reason, an awardee fails to enroll or participate in an advanced degree program, it is the expectation that the awardee will return the scholarship money to CSHA.

There are several types of donations to the CSHA scholarship fund:
  • Association member or individual donation
  • Corporate donor
  • Honor or Memorial donation
  • Organizational donation

How will my contributions to the scholarship fund be recognized?
Corporate, honor, memorial and organization sponsored scholarships will be recognized in the title of the scholarship as well as in CSHA publications. Association members or individual donations will be recognized in CSHA publications and will be accumulative in levels of contribution.
$25 - $99 Friend    $1,000 - $2,499 Student's sponsor    $5,000 - $9,999 Silver Donor
$100 - $499 Supporter    $2,500 - $3,499 Student's Hero    $10,000 - $24,999 Gold Donor
$500 - $999 Benefactor    $4,000 - 4,999 Bronze Donor    $25,000 + Blue Ribbon Donor
