•District News

District 9 Advisory Committee had a joint NSSLHA/CSHA event at San Diego State University on February 10.  The event was an informal dinner and informational gathering to let students know the benefits of joining CSHA as well as offer a chance to meet CSHA members and hear about the upcoming state convention.  Diane Collins (CSHA Director, Dist 10) and Terri Hopper (CSHA Student Representative, Southern Area) joined us for this event.  There were over 30 students who attended the function.

On February 11, there was a Department of Education meeting scheduled in San Diego to allow ASHA members an opportunity to provide input regarding new IDEA Law.  This event was attended by some Dist 9 members, and reportedly there was an excellent turn out.  Those attending were able to submit questions and comments to the ED representatives.

District 9 is planning a workshop on the "hot" topic of autism for Saturday, May 21.  At the present time, we hope to be able to have speech pathologist Lannie Legler to speak on Teaching Social Communication Skills to Adolescents with Aspergers.  This was based on input from District 9 members.  A half-day workshop is in the works!

The Nominating Committee welcomes newly elected members Marcelle Richardson and Donna Swanson-Perrelet.  Thanks to outgoing Nominating Committee Toni Cacciatore and Brian DeLeon for their service to the committee for the past 2 years. Your input and help was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Julianna Borgatti and Shay McMinn for being recognized by CSHA District 9 for their contributions and for receiving the CSHA Awards for Service and Achievement respectively.  District 9 is also pleased to note that our new CSHA President-Elect will be our very own Marlowe Fischer! Congratulations to Marlowe.

Due to a change in job requiring relocation to Sacramento,  Jan Speirs will be stepping down from her position as Director.  Kathryn Kinslow will be filling the role, and a special election will be held to replace the Director-Elect position
.

Legislative News:

Jan Speirs and Angela Mandas attended the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board Meeting on July 15th in Marina del Rey for review and comment on the Draft Issue Paper on speech pathologists using electrical stimulation for dysphagia.  The statement is available on the SLPAB website at www.slpab.ca.gov and serves to provide legal guidance for speech-language pathologists with questions on this topic.  The ASHA website also has some talking points on this topic.
