Welcome to District #7’s web page.  I am Marianne Stone Smith, and I am the Director of CSHA District #7.  I am just beginning my second year as your Director, but I have been involved in CSHA as a district advisory board member since I graduated from CSUN.  This organization does so much to advance our professions and to represent our membership as state legislation issues impact us.  Sonia K. Aller is the Director-Elect and will take over as Director in June 2009.  Both of us attend four CSHA Board meetings a year and serve as your voice to that board.  We are a very active district and would love to have you join us at any of our continuing education or social events.  We also welcome your suggestions and input.  Please feel free to contact either one of us.

Service Award to Denise Middleton

District News

For those of you who were unable to attend the District #7 reception at the CSHA convention in Monterrey, you missed the introduction and honoring of our district award recipients.  It was a pleasure for Sonia and I to pay tribute to these outstanding individuals:

                Denise Middleton – Outstanding Service
Mary Ann Abbott – Outstanding Achievement
                Diana Branch -        Outstanding SLPA
                Jennifer Hanson -     Outstanding Student

Although Jennifer Hanson was unable to attend the convention, two of her professors at CSUN, both former District #7 directors, Janice Woolsey and Connie Stratton, accepted in her behalf, holding up her picture as they shared the accomplishments of this outstanding student.
We actually had 5 past directors attend the reception:  Sally Cook, Muriel Goldojarb, Janice Woolsey, Connie Stratton and Denise Middleton and a large contingency of CSUN alumni and district members in addition to the friends and families of our award recipients.

The Nominating Committee will begin their search for award candidates throughout the district this month.  If you know of any person or agency that deserves recognition, please contact Sonia or a member of the Nominating Committee with your suggestion.

Upcoming Events:

Your advisory committee has been hard at work planning CEU and social events for the 2008-2009
term which began June 1st.  Watch for dates & times for workshops on

  • Supervision
  • Planning for the future for young adults on the ASD spectrum
  • Care of children’s hearing and voice.

In addition we are planning a social event in the northeastern region of the district in conjunction with
District #6 and another social/or educational event in Pasadena.  It should prove to be a very busy year!

Nominating Committee:

Marianne and the nominating committee have completed their packets for some outstanding individuals to be considered for State Honors in a variety of categories.  We should hear the results in December.  Keep your fingers crossed....

Advisory Committee:

The advisory committee met in September to discuss a number of topics that are pertinent to the district as well as to the field.  Speech pathology shortages across all settings, inappropriate use of SLPA's, and workload/caseload were among the topics of discussion.  If you have any concerns that would like the advisory board to address, please feel free to email.  The advisory committee also made some suggestions for improving the ease and use of the CSHA website.

Social/Forum on Tuesday
Sixty guests attended the District 7 Social/Forum on Tuesday, November 19, at Connie Stratton's home in South Pasadena. We had a great time.

Sue Trautman, co-owner of the Center for Developing Kids gave us a presentation on the terminology and the basic concepts of sensory integration theory. She showed videos of treatment sessions and explained how sensory integration affects the performance of children in various activities including speech and language.

Legislative News:

The biggest news is that SB724 is moving forward in Sacramento.  This bill is being carried by Jack Scott.  This is a very important bill for our profession, so please write your legislatures in support of this.

District 7 members Rosemary Scott and Joanna Cazden continue to be our local legislative liaison representatives for CSHA.  Thanks!

The 2005/2006 State budget is being debated in Sacramento.  Please take a moment and visit the CSHA website for the bills and issues that may affect our professions.
