What is District 9?
District 9 is one of ten geographically divided areas of the California Speech and Hearing Association. The district encompasses San Diego County and
Imperial County. The district has approximately 1000 members. Within the district there are two universities with Speech and Language programs
including:

(CSUSM has received CAA in candidacy status and will accept their first cohort of students fall semester 2010)
District News
CSHA Convention News 2010 in Monterey:
TCSHA'S Annual State Convention this year was held in Monterey on April 15th thru the 18th 2010. There were over 1400 attendees. The District 9
Awards Ceremony was held on Friday April 16th celebrating four district level award winners including: Kathleen Catterall for Outstanding Achievement, Anna
Wong for Outstanding Service, Liza Blumenfeld for Outstanding Service and Julia O'Brien for Outstanding Student. On Saturday April 16th District 9's very
own Jacqueline Kreiter-Kotas was honored with this year's very prestigious State Diversity Award. Congratulations to all our District 9 awardees!
SAVE THE DATE:
The CSHA 2011 Annual State Convention will be held in Los Angeles at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel on March 24th through the 27th. Information on
speakers and workshop topics to follow.
Continuing Education/Workshops:
Saturday October 23RD 2010- Back by popular demand for the third time will be District 9’s full day six-hour course on Supervision entitled RPE Supervision:
Meeting Their Needs and Yours. The course will be held at Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s new main auditorium and Charlotte Lopes and Kathleen Catterall will be
the speakers. The course will cover a wide variety of topics including SLPAB requirements and forms, ethical considerations, supervisory theories and
facilitating critical thinking and leadership in the supervisee. Please contact Paul McRae at Paul.McRae@sharp.com

District 9 is looking into a second workshop for spring 2011 with focus upon interpreting modified barium swallow studies for difficult cases. The workshop
would offer 3.0 CEU credits. I am also currently looking for any suggestions for speakers and topics of interest to the district. Please contact me at

SLPA Information:
Lizette Lopez, CSHA’s Northern California SLPA Representative and Dianna Branch, CSHA’s Southern California SLPA Representative have created a Face
Book account to aid in SLPA communication across the state. To find the SLPA Face Book Account type in California SLPA or if you have SLPA questions

Student Information:
Megan Carey replaced Jesse Cole as the new CSHA Southern Student Representative for the 2010-2012 term. You can contact Megan at
megane.carey@mail.com if you have student questions.
Student Education:
District 9 is planning two student presentations for fall 2010 and spring 2011. We are looking at two topics including dysphagia and speech/language
assessment/treatment. The presentations will be open to SDSU and CSUSM students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as SLPAs and
SLPA students from Grossmont College.
Local Legislative Action:
CSHA Legislative Council: Robert Powell J.D. rpowell@csha.org.
Robert Powel has extended his contract with CSHA for two years through 2012. Robert has also agreed to mentor the new incoming legislative council for
the last six months of his contract. Robert has been working diligently for CSHA members and was instrumental in helping reverse the Blue Cross rate
increases for Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy session reimbursement charges.
